Senior Receives Full-Ride Scholarship to Princeton

This fall, B&P senior Kristen Ogogo will become a Princeton University student studying molecular biology–an accomplishment that requires perseverance, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to her dreams. With the support of many devoted teachers, family, and generous donors, Kristen secured a life-changing opportunity—a full-ride scholarship through QuestBridge.

The Journey to Princeton

As the daughter of a Kenyan immigrant who came to the United States at 20, Kristen grew up understanding the importance of education and the sacrifices necessary to succeed. "My mom never had the opportunities I've had," Kristen shares. "That motivates me to make the most of every opportunity."

Through the QuestBridge program, which connects high-achieving students from low-income backgrounds with top universities, Kristen navigated a highly competitive application process. Out of over 25,000 applicants, she was one of just 2,627 students to match with a prestigious institution.

A Community of Support

While Kristen's determination was crucial to her success, she credits the community of teachers and mentors at Bonner & Prendie for helping her along the way.

"Most of what I value about Bonner & Prendie is the community. There's always someone to help you," Kristen says. "Each teacher pushed me to dream big and encouraged me to advocate for myself."

Ms. Baron, B&P school counselor, was deeply moved by her dedication. "Kristen wrote an incredible number of essays in addition to her schoolwork. Not everyone has her determination," Ms. Baron says. Ms. Baron connected Kristen with Ms. Linda Toner, a former Bonner & Prendie English teacher, who offered feedback on her QuestBridge essays.

"Two teachers that really helped me with recommendation letters going back to junior year were Mr. Watson, my AP US History teacher, and Dr. St. Clair, my AP Computer Science Principles teacher," Kristen explains. "They were always ready to jump in with recommendations. Even over the summer, they would reply and offer advice on how to really express myself in applications. We still have that supportive relationship where I can ask them for advice."

Ms. Rodgers, who teaches AP English Literature, was instrumental in refining Kristen's Princeton essay. "Princeton requires a graded written paper, and they specifically mentioned how much they liked the paper she helped me with when they called to congratulate me on my acceptance. I have her to thank a lot for that."

Kristen also credits Mr. McShane, her AP Calculus teacher, for his unwavering emotional support. "Since my sophomore year, he has helped me manage the stress of all these applications. Whenever I felt overwhelmed, he helped ground me and redirect my focus. I could always talk to him without judgment. He made such a difference."

Ms. Ciliberti, the Vice Principal of Academics, has been another pillar of support. "She's become my school mom. She's supported me through everything. Since sophomore year, she's been my AP Capstone teacher, and I can always go to her for anything."

To Kristen, her Bonner & Prendie experience may not have occurred without the unwavering support of the Jordan family, particularly her godparents, Tom Jordan (Bonner' 74) and Anne Jordan Staiber (Prendie' 83). Embracing Kristen and her sister as their own, the Jordans provided financial assistance, love, encouragement, and a steadfast belief in their future. "They have been a guiding light in my darkest moments and a source of strength when I felt I had none left," Kristen shared. "Their faith in me has reinforced a powerful message—keep faith in God, believe in yourself, and trust that good people will stand by you."

Inspired by a Teacher's Legacy

Kristen's interest in molecular biology and her dream of becoming an oncologist came from a personal loss. "I always wanted to be a doctor, but I became interested in oncology when my favorite 8th-grade teacher at Drexel Neumann Academy, Mrs. Sue Masciantonio, lost her battle with cancer. She inspired me to believe in myself and strive for success."

A summer molecular imaging program at Stanford University gave Kristen hands-on experience in the field, further solidifying her ambition. "Participating in this program really clarified things for me," she reflects.

Giving Back

Kristen's achievements extend beyond academics. As a B&P student, she's the President of several clubs, including Hi-Q, Mathletes, Panda Pride, and Nature Club. She's also a Senior Student Council Executive Council Member and Vice-President of Tutoring for the National Honor Society.

As a Howley Scholar and recipient of B&P's Believe & Achieve Scholarship and a scholarship from Drexel Neumann Academy, Kristen has also benefited from the generosity of many donors.

"During my first two years at Bonner & Prendie, scholarships covered most of my school tuition. Then, my scholarship increased during my junior and senior years and fully covered my tuition. That's been a huge relief for my family while my sister attends St. Joseph's University."

As she prepares to embark on her Princeton journey, Kristen is grateful to those who supported her. "The friendships I've made and the supportive environment at Bonner & Prendie have shaped my ambitions," she says. "I'm ready to pursue my dreams and make a difference."

Ms. Baron beams with pride, reflecting on Kristen's journey, "It's been incredible to watch Kristen grow into the driven young woman she is today. Her story is a testament to the power of determination, community, and support."

Kristen Ogogo's future is bright, and the Bonner & Prendie community stands behind her, celebrating her achievements and anticipating all she will accomplish.

"I want to thank my mom, my sister, my uncle Paul, and the many teachers and mentors who were there for me when I needed them," says Kristen. "I never felt alone, and I'm excited about the future. I think Princeton is exactly where I'm supposed to be."
