For senior Kristen Ogogo, being accepted to Princeton University through the QuestBridge program was the culmination of hard work, sacrifice, and an unwavering determination to succeed. With the guidance of B&P school counselor Allison Baron, Kristen navigated the demanding application process and secured a life-changing opportunity.
What is QuestBridge?
QuestBridge is a nonprofit organization that connects high-achieving students from low-income backgrounds with top colleges and universities. This year, over 25,000 students applied, and only 7,288 were named finalists. Of those, just 2,627 matched with a college, including Kristen.
The Rigors of the Application Process
"The application process was not for the faint of heart," says Ms. Baron. "Kristen dedicated her summer to filling out applications, ranking her top 15 schools, and writing essays."
"It was incredibly rigorous," Kristen recalls. "I had to sacrifice a lot, but when I read the decision, it was a cry of instant relief. The cost of higher education had been a huge stress for my family, so having that weight lifted was unforgettable."
Princeton, her second choice after Stanford, offered her the opportunity to pursue her dreams.
Dreaming Big: Plans for the Future
Kristen's mom, who immigrated to the United States from Kenya at just 20 years old, has always encouraged her to reach for the stars. "My mom never had the opportunities I've had," explains Kristen, "which motivates me to make the most of every opportunity."
Kristen plans to study molecular biology at Princeton with the ultimate goal of becoming an oncologist.
"I always wanted to be a doctor, but I became interested in oncology when my favorite 8th-grade teacher at Drexel Neumann Academy, Mrs. Masentonio, lost her battle with cancer. She inspired me to believe in myself and strive for success."
After participating in a summer molecular imaging program at Stanford University, Kristen gained hands-on experience that deepened her passion for science and medicine. "Participating in this program really clarified things for me," says Kristen.
Mentorship from Guidance
Kristen credits a lot of her success with QuestBridge and Princeton University to the support she received from her guidance counselor, Ms. Allison Baron. "Most of what I value about Bonner & Prendie is the community," Kristen says. "There's always someone to help you—for me, that was Ms. Baron. She pushed me to dream big and helped me advocate for myself."
Allison Baron remembers Kristen's drive and focus vividly. "Kristen wrote an incredible number of essays in addition to her schoolwork. Not everyone has her determination. I utilized an incredible resource in Linda Toner, a former Bonner and Prendie English teacher, to assist Kristen in providing feedback on her essays. Kristen's perseverance is what made her successful."
Giving Back to the Community
Beyond academics, Kristen has demonstrated a commitment to her community.
"Kristen organized a backpack drive at her church, collecting donations and hosting an event to distribute supplies to those in need," Ms. Baron says proudly. "She is also a Howley Scholar and a recipient of the Believe & Achieve Scholarship from Bonner & Prendie and another from her alma mater, Drexel Neumann Academy."
Looking Ahead to Princeton
As Kristen prepares to begin her journey at Princeton, she reflects on the impact Bonner & Prendie has had on her life. "The friendships I've made and the supportive environment have shaped my ambitions," she says. "I'm ready to pursue my dreams and make a difference."
"It's been incredible to watch Kristen grow into the driven young woman she is today," Ms. Baron says. "Her story is a testament to the power of determination, community, and support."
Kristen's journey is just beginning, but her dedication and resilience ensure her bright future. Bonner & Prendie is proud to celebrate her success and looks forward to seeing all she will accomplish.
